5 Signs your Small Business Website is Hurting More than Helping
For most business owners, building a website is one of those "chores" that gets checked off the list and never thought about again. But what if that quickly thrown-together site is actually doing more harm than good? Here are five signs your website has some room for improvement:
1. It's not mobile-friendly.
Most people are browsing and researching on their phones, usually in between tasks or whenever they get a spare minute. If your site was built with only the desktop version in mind, the formatting can look completely off on mobile, or worse, certain sections of your site might not show up at all.
2. It loads slowly. A slow site doesn't just frustrate visitors. Google also penalizes slow-loading pages in search rankings, which means fewer people are even getting the opportunity to find you. And in today's world, convenience is everything. If your site isn't loading fast, your visitors are already gone.
3. There's no clear call-to-action. After years of writing newsletters and managing campaigns, I can tell you that the CTA is everything. Without a clear next step, whether that's booking a call, filling out a form, or even just sending an email, potential clients have no path to actually reach you.
4. The human side of your business isn't showing. At this point, people are savvy. If your website doesn't feel like there's a real person behind it, someone with a clear personality, values, and credibility, it's hard for visitors to feel confident enough to reach out. Small businesses win on connection, and your website should reflect that.
5. It looks outdated or straight out of the box. When a website is built just to check a box, it shows. Generic templates with no customization can make your business look inactive, unpolished, or worse, untrustworthy. First impressions matter, and your website is usually the first one you get.
With all of that in mind, there's clearly a lot more that goes into a great website than just picking a Squarespace template. I help bridge that gap, bringing your business's voice to life online and making sure the right clients can actually find you.
